Jelawat, or The Weekender Problem

We've been experiencing typhoons every other weekend it seems.  For some reason these typhoons never hit us during the week when we'd get a day off from work/school.  No, they come on Friday or Saturday, just in time to ruin our holidays.  Mother nature knows how to punish us good.

This typhoon that just hit us was named Jelawat (which sounds like a name for a Star Wars character) and it was quite strong.  Two weeks ago, the typhoon that passed by seemed quite tame in comparison to this one.  I woke up this morning to my building rattling and being hit by very fast moving, strong gusts of wind.  Plus the AC was leaking water into my apartment and water was coming in through the sliding glass doors.

The winds were so strong that they tossed cars and large dumpsters around.

After the storm I took some photos while on a walk in my neighborhood.

This was attached to a shop across the street

Windows blown out

Store signs torn on Kokusaidori

Trees uprooted
Yet, the bars are open for business

The Okinawa Times caught some of the storm on video.  They seem to be fascinated with pigs though.

Let's hope Sunday brings us better weather!  Many of the schools have sports or school festivals this weekend, so it will be a shame if they are cancelled.  The students need these things to release the stress they have on them.
