After watching "Tiny Furniture," I have decided to make a creative nonfiction film about life in Okinawa. Actually, I wanted to do this before and I had been thinking of how Ben Rivers makes his documentary-drama films (not by hand, per se, but the subject matter and the way he films things) last spring. But when I saw Lena Dunham's film (as well as her take on her first feature "Creative Nonfiction") I decided that it is time. These two filmmakers are completely different from each other, so I'm not really comparing the two, but I do find both of their styles inspirational.
I've made a few shorts since I moved to Okinawa, but nothing about Okinawa itself and the people I've met here. Since I plan on leaving after this year, I hope this film will be something that enables me to hang on to the life I made for myself here, in its dysfunctional functionality.
So, I put this out there. Let's see if I make good on it.
